Iron & Manganese Filters

Aqua North Water Systems Ltd. offers two styles of filters for iron, manganese and hydrogen sulfide reduction.

  • Manganese greensand filtration
  • Air catalyst filtration
Iron & Manganese in Groundwater

Manganese Greensand Filtration

Manganese Greensand is formulated from a glauconite greensand which is capable of removing iron, manganese and hydrogen sulfide from water through oxidation and filtration. Manganese and soluble iron are oxidized and precipitated by contact with higher oxides of manganese on the greensand granules. The hydrogen sulfide is eliminated by oxidation to sulfate and an insoluble precipitate. When the manganese greensand bed is saturated, it is regenerated with a weak potassium permanganate solution which is rinsed out through the bed and sent to a sanitary drain. The potassium permanganate is available at our store for purchase.

Our iron filters will continue to filter iron until a set amount of days or gallons is achieved at which point the filter will automatically regenerate itself ridding the bed of iron and preparing for another filtering cycle.

Our filters use Clack Valve heads and fiberglass media tanks which are made from high performance composite material with FRP filament winding. Our valves and tanks come in a variety of sizes for any residential, commercial, agriculture or industrial application. These units are automatically regenerated by programing the valve head to a set amount of days or gallons.

Benefits:

  • Reduces iron and manganese
  • Reduces hydrogen sulfide (rotten eggs)
  • Reduces staining of clothing, tubs & fixtures
  • Does not plug up piping due to pre-oxidized iron

Maintenance:

A moderate level of maintenance will ensure that your iron filter is always working at its best level of efficiency.

  • Add potassium permanganate every three months (estimate)
  • Re-bed the media every 5-10 years depending on severity of the water source

Air Catalyst Filtration

Oxidation prior to filtration is an effective way to remove iron, manganese, and hydrogen sulfide (rotten egg odor) from your water. This method has been around for decades in one form or another. The oxidation of iron can be done in many ways; however, we prefer to use air over chemical. We inject the air into the water supply with an air injection pump or venturi. One injected the water will pass through a contact vessel where the iron, manganese, and hydrogen sulfide will be allowed to come out of solution for removal through the filter.

The Flex-Lite FLU tank is made from a unique 3-piece internal construction that allows for consistent engineered dome profiles and integrally bonded connections that lead to longer tank life. Its heavy-duty base is molded out of ABS for maximum strength and durability. And, it has a removable schedule 80 PVC bottom connection that can be "accessorized" for increased installation flexibility making this an excellent choice of tank to be used for air contact.

Mazzei injectors require differential pressure to create suction. The injector’s outlet pressure (backpressure) must be sufficiently lower than the inlet pressure. We control this by building a bypass around the injector with a throttle control allowing us to use your own water pressure to inject the air into the system. For most models, significant suction occurs with 25-30% pressure differential.

Benefits:

  • Reduces iron & manganese
  • Reduces hydrogen sulfide (rotten eggs)
  • Reduces staining of clothing, tubs & fixtures
  • Quick regeneration time
  • No chemical injections
  • New

Maintenance:

  • Clean out pressure tank and piping prior to iron filter every 5-10 years
